Ford has announced that they expect to lose $4 billion on their EV business in 2026. They are building out factories for new products.
Ford held an earnings call on February 11, 2026. Jim Farley made these points about EVs and the utility battery business.
The conversion of the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky from ICE cars to Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle platform is ongoing. No products are being built yet but that is coming.
Ford is entering the electric utility stationary battery business. Tesla, BYD, and Volkswagen are already there. Tesla’s energy division is growing in gross profit. I think Ford noticed.
The conversion of the Dearborn truck plant to make the EREV series-hybrid 2027 F150 Lightning pickup is ongoing. The EREV configuration has a battery you can charge through a cord and a gas tank you fill at a gas station. The motor will be sized for towing and heavy loads. With a light load, a full gas tank, and a full battery the range is expected to be 700 miles.
