The outage continues. My thoughts about using solar as a tool against outages are below this post from X.
In conversations I point out that for the first time in 35 years of analyzing energy projects on customer sites it is now possible to install your own solar panels at about the same cost as buying from a utility company.
Add a battery in your garage and you can go well into the evening. Add an electric car with the right electronics and you can go perhaps forever, charging in the daytime and using from both the garage and car batteries at night. You can add a connection to charge your battery from a generator you might borrow or buy during an emergency. All this technology exists and is in use today. You can buy it.
Most EVs are owned by households with at least two vehicles. If the other one uses gasoline you have two possibilities of being able to drive.
If you heat with natural gas or propane it is likely that a small amount of electric power will keep your furnace fan and controls working.
An extended outage is a threat to lives and property. The combination of solar panels and a battery are one tool against outages. Seriously. The sun comes out right after the storm passes.
