For those who know me well or are curious, here is an update at the six-month mark in my self-declared writing career.
On my own web site, richardrusk.com, I have published 25 Posts, and at least that many Notes. I have 72 subscribers and 708 followers. I am using Substack as the service for my web site. Substack authors have control of the content and organization of the pages. Substack’s pairing of readers and writers is designed to build a community.
On X I have made 314 Posts and I have 125 followers.
On LinkedIn I have 408 connections, 426 followers, and 100 profile views in the last 90 days.
Combining the user counts, I have built a potential audience of about 1000 people. New followers add themselves almost every day based on what I have already published. I have followers on all continents except Antarctica.
My latest connection on LinkedIn sent me this compliment; “I added you because you strike me as someone with real depth in your writing—and I genuinely enjoy connecting with people who spark meaningful conversations.”
Three personal contacts have offered to help spread the word of my services. One is interested in writing and teaching. He may become a collaborator. The org chart is growing already!
My next goal is to write slides for a one-hour webinar I will present on the web. I am part way to my goal of 40 slides. That is one per 90 seconds, a good rule of thumb for a smooth presentation.
It will be a back-to-basics kind of session, reviewing the fundamental jargon of the energy engineer’s craft. I will throw in memory tricks I have used successfully. I know from experience that engineers with a little gray hair love this format. New engineers are welcome, too, of course. For them it will be a new-to-basics session.
Watch for the announcement and help me polish my presentation.
Incredible progress, Richard! It’s inspiring to see how intentional you’ve been in building both your body of work and your community in just six months. I’m genuinely glad to be part of this journey. Just by stepping into the Substack community, I’m being exposed to great minds like yours. Excited to keep learning alongside you and can’t wait to see how your webinar comes together. Keep leading the way!
